Their foreign roots aside, it is clear that Clegg's parents were keen to give their children the most traditional of English upbringings. Clegg has claimed that he found the school 'stiflingly conventional' yet he was made Head Prefect in his final year.

From there, Clegg went to Westminster School. While some have argued that as an institution it is in some way fundamentally different to Eton College - Cameron's school - its fees, its history and its elitist traditions are very much of a kind.

Sainsbury dynasty. Clegg's attempt to portray it as an ordinary school is worth repeating. Clegg is remembered by his peers and teachers as an academically bright pupil. By all accounts Clegg was a model student and it is perhaps a desperation to seem less so that explains the way he appears to have embellished the sole incident of teenage rebellion in which he was involved.

He has told how as a year-old he set fire to two greenhouses of cacti belonging to a professor in a drunken prank during a school exchange to Munich. One of us had a lighter and turned it on, and this place was jamful of furry, fuzzy cacti, and the flame nicked one of them and up it went.

It is understood that she was Clegg's first serious girlfriend and that they were still together when he went to Robinson College, Cambridge to read archaeology and anthropology. Pippa Harris, an old friend from those days, says that when she heard talk of Clegg's 30 conquests she laughed out loud. While at Cambridge, Clegg insists that he was not interested in student politics, recounting a visit to the Cambridge Union where he was confronted by Tory girls in pearls 'braying at each other'.

Clegg, who initially denied it outright, now says that he has 'no recollection' of joining the group. There he spent a term studying green politics at Minnesota University followed by a brief period in New York as a factchecker on Left-wing publication The Nation.

Clegg regularly refers to his time in America and a short stint that followed working for the Financial Times. What he has been less forthcoming about is time spent at a lobbying firm by the name of GJW in London, one of Britain's top lobbyists, which was at the heart of a 'cash-for-access' scandal in When confronted by the omission earlier this week, he snapped in reply: 'Honestly, this is such bilge.
