Why do sulfur smell

Even if there is another magnesium or aluminium anode rod in the tank, the Corro-Protec will work perfectly. We just installed a new gas water heater. Our hot water smells rotten. It never smelled until we replaced it. Will this work in a water system with sulfate oxidizing bacteria?

We have two summer houses next to each other. We just got a new electric water heater in one.
